Rome enters the NBA Europe decision window
Rome’s NBA Europe race is no longer just background speculation. Both BC Roma and Maxima Roma have submitted bids for the city’s permanent franchise, while the NBA has said it has identified clear frontrunners across its 12 target markets.
In June, NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum said successful bidders could begin to be identified within 60 to 90 days. That decision window is now opening.
BC Roma honorary president Valerio Bianchini has added another layer to the story, suggesting that one of Rome’s two new clubs could eventually enter NBA Europe while the other may pursue a future in EuroLeague.
Why it matters: the biggest Rome basketball story may soon move beyond players and results. Ownership, investment and the right to represent the city in NBA Europe are becoming the real long-term battleground.

Scariolo adds strategic weight to BC Roma
BC Roma has added Sergio Scariolo as Special Advisor for Basketball Strategy, giving the new organisation one of the most experienced figures in European basketball.
His role will be strategic rather than operational: Alessandro Magro remains fully responsible for the first team, while Scariolo will contribute to technical planning, youth development and the construction of a sustainable long-term sporting model.
The appointment has also attracted international coverage, adding Scariolo to a project already associated with Donnie Nelson and Luka Dončić.
Why it matters: BC Roma is beginning to look like more than a newly assembled team. The club is building an organisational structure designed with a much bigger international horizon in mind.

Maxima keeps building an NBA bridge
Maxima Roma is continuing to build one of the most NBA-connected rosters in European basketball.
After signing Aaron Holiday following eight NBA seasons, the club has added Vernon Carey Jr., the former Duke standout drafted by Charlotte in 2020. The roster also includes players with NBA experience such as Matt Ryan and Xavier Moon.
Holiday’s move generated coverage in the United States, while Carey’s signing has quickly travelled across international basketball media.
Why it matters: Maxima is not only building a competitive Serie A and EuroCup team. It is developing a recognisable transatlantic profile — particularly relevant in a city where two ambitious projects are competing for a place in NBA Europe.
